Tsawwassen ⇄ Salt Spring Island Ferry: Availability & Sold-Out Alerts

Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Salt Spring Island (Long Harbour) · 1 hour 25 minutes to 3 hours

When are you travelling? Pick your date and see which sailings are sold out. Watch one and we text you, free, if a spot opens.

Salt Spring is the largest and most populated of the Southern Gulf Islands, and Long Harbour is its vehicle link to the mainland. The single most useful thing to know about this crossing is that the time depends entirely on which sailing you take. A non-stop run is 1 hour 25 minutes, barely longer than Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay. The same route on a full multi-island pattern calls at Galiano, Mayne and Pender first and takes 3 hours.

That is not a scheduling quirk you can ignore. Two sailings a couple of hours apart can differ by an hour and a half of your day, so read the stop details on the specific departure rather than assuming a number. Both patterns run daily.

The vessels here are smaller than the ones on the Victoria and Nanaimo runs, and there are far fewer sailings a day. Reserved space is correspondingly tighter than the raw numbers suggest, and a sold-out sailing costs you longer, because the next one may be hours away rather than an hour. Cancellations still release back into the pool right up to departure, and FerryHawk texts you free when one does.

When this route sells out

Tsawwassen → Long Harbour: Friday and Saturday, and the market run

Outbound pressure builds through Friday and peaks Saturday in spring and summer, carrying weekend visitors, second-home owners, and people timing their arrival for the Saturday market in Ganges. The non-stop sailings go first, because they are the ones worth planning a day around. If the fast departure is sold out, check the multi-stop one before giving up: it is a longer trip on the same day rather than no trip at all.

Long Harbour → Tsawwassen: Sunday, and whatever the earlier islands left

Return demand lands Sunday afternoon and again Monday morning. On a multi-island run the ship reaches Long Harbour already carrying vehicles from the islands before it, so the space showing at your terminal is what those stops did not take. That is the mechanism behind a sailing that looked fine on Thursday and is gone by Saturday night.

Oversized vehicles, RVs, and trailers

Over-height space here (over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long) is a small share of an already small deck, and on a multi-island run it is shared with whatever the ship picked up before Long Harbour. Book it rather than planning to talk your way on, and set a FerryHawk oversized alert if the sailing you want is gone.

The BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide covers the height and length thresholds, what counts toward your measurement, and why over-height space sells out first. For this crossing specifically, see live oversized availability on Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Salt Spring Island (Long Harbour).

Drive-up rules are not the same on every crossing, and one direction stopped taking drive-up traffic in October 2025. See which routes still allow drive-up, how much of each deck is held back for the queue, and what to do on the direction that takes none.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ferry from Tsawwassen to Salt Spring Island?

Between 1 hour 25 minutes and 3 hours, depending on the sailing. Non-stop departures to Long Harbour take 1 hour 25 minutes. A run that calls at Galiano, Mayne and Pender first takes 3 hours. Check the stop details on your specific departure.

The Tsawwassen to Salt Spring ferry is sold out. What now?

Set a free FerryHawk alert and take the next cancellation. They release right up to departure. Also look at the other sailings that day: the non-stop and multi-stop departures sell independently, and the slower one is often still open when the fast one has gone.

Which sailing is the fast one?

The non-stop departures. BC Ferries prints the stop details beside every sailing time, so a departure marked non-stop is the 1 hour 25 minute crossing and one listing other islands is not. It is worth checking before you book rather than after.

How far ahead should I book to Salt Spring Island?

Earlier than for a mainland route. Fewer sailings a day means each one carries more of the demand, and the convenient departures on summer weekends are the first to go.

Can I drive up at Tsawwassen for Long Harbour without a reservation?

Standby space is held on every sailing, but it is a small deck. On a busy weekend that can mean waiting for a later sailing, and later here can mean much later.

Does FerryHawk track RV and oversized space to Salt Spring?

Yes, tracked separately from standard vehicles and in both directions. Given how little over-height room these vessels carry, an oversized alert is worth setting well before your travel dates.
