RV & Oversized Vehicle Space: Tsawwassen ⇄ Salt Spring Island

Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Salt Spring Island (Long Harbour) · 1 hour 25 minutes to 3 hours · Oversized only

Everything on this page is over-height space — vehicles over 7' / 2.13 m tall or 20' / 6.10 m long. Standard vehicle availability is a separate pool and is shown on the Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Salt Spring Island (Long Harbour) route page.

Over-height space here is genuinely scarce. Pick your travel date, watch a sold-out sailing, and we text you, free, if a spot opens.

Over 7ft = oversized
Over 20ft = oversized

Salt Spring gets more visitors than the other Southern Gulf Islands and it gets them in bigger vehicles: campers heading for the provincial parks, trailers behind trucks bound for a property, and the trades that keep an island of that size running. They all want the same short list of over-height spots.

Everything below is oversized availability only. It is a separate pool from standard vehicle space on the same sailing, and it is the one that empties first.

Why oversized space goes first

The fast sailing is the one everyone wants

The non-stop departures reach Long Harbour in 1 hour 25 minutes against 3 hours for a full multi-island run, so the oversized space on those specific sailings goes long before the slower ones. If the quick departure shows nothing, look at the same day's multi-stop sailing before assuming the day is closed.

Over-height space is shared down the whole run

On a multi-island sailing the over-height allocation is not reserved for Salt Spring. Whatever went aboard at Galiano, Mayne or Pender is occupying the same deck space, so what is left when the ship reaches Long Harbour depends on stops you never see.

Is your vehicle oversized?

Over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long books as oversized, measured to the highest fixed point and across the full length of vehicle plus trailer. It is the same threshold on every route in the system.

Book the vehicle you are actually driving. On a sailing carrying a handful of over-height spots there is no spare deck to absorb something bigger than what was declared.

The full rules, and what they mean for fares and loading, are in the BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is oversized space so limited on this route?

Smaller vessels than the Victoria and Nanaimo runs, and a multi-island sailing pattern that shares the over-height allocation across every island it calls at.

Does the sailing I pick change my odds?

Yes, more than on most routes. The non-stop departures save an hour and a half and their oversized space sells accordingly. The slower multi-stop sailings on the same day are consistently the easier booking.

How far ahead should I book an RV or trailer to Salt Spring?

Well before your dates are close, especially for weekend and summer travel. With few departures a day, each one carries far more of the demand than a mainland equivalent.

What counts as an oversized vehicle on BC Ferries?

Anything over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long, measured to the highest fixed point and including any trailer.

Can I drive up with an RV and wait?

Standby space is held, but on a small deck with few over-height spots to start with, the oversized drive-up room on a busy sailing can be nothing at all.
