Start with the fact that changes how you plan this trip: there is no direct sailing from Tsawwassen to Saturna. Not a rare one, none. Every Tsawwassen to Lyall Harbour itinerary on the printed schedule is either a transfer at another Gulf Island, usually Village Bay on Mayne, or a thru-fare routed via Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island.
The transfer itineraries run about 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours. The Swartz Bay thru-fares are longer still, commonly four hours and occasionally close to five. Both are legitimate ways to get there and BC Ferries sells both, so a booking that looks absurdly long is probably correct rather than broken.
Saturna is the least populated of the Southern Gulf Islands and it has the thinnest schedule to match: fewer daily departures than any other Gulf Islands crossing FerryHawk watches. A missed sailing here is not an hour's inconvenience. Cancellations do release right up to departure, and a free FerryHawk alert texts you the moment one does.
When this route sells out
Tsawwassen → Lyall Harbour: the connection is the constraint
Because almost every itinerary depends on a transfer, the sailing you need is often the second leg rather than the first, and a full boat on either leg breaks the trip. Summer weekends are when both legs tighten at once. Book the whole itinerary early rather than assuming you can improvise the connection at Village Bay.
Lyall Harbour → Tsawwassen: a short list of departures
Coming home the schedule is thinner still, and Lyall Harbour tends to be a late call, so the ship can arrive with much of its deck already committed. If your dates flex at all, travelling back early in the week rather than on a Sunday is the single biggest thing you can do for your odds.
Oversized vehicles, RVs, and trailers
Over-height space (over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long) is scarce here for two reasons at once: a small allocation on a small vessel, and a transfer that has to hold that space on both legs. Given how few sailings serve Saturna, a missed oversized reservation can cost you a day rather than an hour. Book well ahead and set a FerryHawk oversized alert as backup.
The BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide covers the height and length thresholds, what counts toward your measurement, and why over-height space sells out first. For this crossing specifically, see live oversized availability on Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Saturna Island (Lyall Harbour).
Travelling without a reservation
Drive-up rules are not the same on every crossing, and one direction stopped taking drive-up traffic in October 2025. See which routes still allow drive-up, how much of each deck is held back for the queue, and what to do on the direction that takes none.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct ferry from Tsawwassen to Saturna Island?
No. Every Tsawwassen to Lyall Harbour itinerary involves either a transfer at another Gulf Island, usually Village Bay on Mayne, or a thru-fare routed via Swartz Bay. There is no through sailing on the printed schedule.
How long does it take to get from Tsawwassen to Saturna Island?
About 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours on the transfer itineraries. The Swartz Bay thru-fare routings take longer, commonly four hours and sometimes close to five. Read the stop details before you book.
What does a transfer mean for my vehicle?
Your itinerary is two legs rather than one, and both need space. That is the practical reason Saturna is the hardest of the five islands to reach on short notice, and the reason booking the full itinerary early matters more here than anywhere else in the group.
The Tsawwassen to Saturna ferry is sold out. What are my options?
Set a free FerryHawk alert. Cancellations release back into the pool right up to departure, and with the fewest sailings of any Gulf Islands route FerryHawk watches, catching one matters more here than almost anywhere in the system.
Can I drive up without a reservation?
Standby space is held on every sailing, but it is a small deck on an infrequent route, and a transfer means you need the gamble to pay off twice. A missed connection here can mean a long wait.
Does FerryHawk track oversized space to Saturna Island?
Yes, separately from standard vehicles and in both directions. Given the transfer and the thin schedule, set the alert well before your travel dates rather than the week of.
