Village Bay is the tightest crossing-time band of the five Gulf Islands routes from Tsawwassen: 1 hour 10 minutes non-stop, 1 hour 55 minutes at worst, and most sailings land at about an hour and a half via Galiano. Whichever departure you take, you know roughly what your day looks like, which is not true of the Salt Spring or Saturna runs.

Mayne sits in the middle of the Southern Gulf Islands, close to Active Pass, and that position is why so many sailings call there. It is also why Village Bay is often a transfer point: several Saturna and Pender itineraries route passengers through it.

The trade-off for being central is competition. Day-trippers, cyclists and weekend property owners all want the same small vehicle deck on the same short list of daily sailings. A sold-out departure still releases cancellations right up to sailing time, and a free FerryHawk alert texts you when one appears.

When this route sells out

Tsawwassen → Village Bay: Friday and Saturday, cyclists and cottages together

Mayne draws weekend cottage traffic and cyclists using the island as a base for the wider Gulf Islands, and outbound sailings from Friday afternoon through Saturday carry both. With a small deck and few daily departures, a sold-out Friday sailing often stays sold out across the weekend's remaining boats.

Village Bay → Tsawwassen: Sunday, plus the transfer traffic

Sunday afternoon carries most of the return load. Village Bay's role as a transfer point works against you here: vehicles moving between islands compete for the same space as the ones going home. An early or mid-week sailing is the more reliable bet when your dates flex.

Oversized vehicles, RVs, and trailers

Over-height space (over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long) is a small allocation on the vessels serving this route, and it is shared with whatever the sailing is already carrying from earlier islands. A trailer or camper bound for Mayne wants a booked oversized spot rather than the drive-up line, and a FerryHawk oversized alert if that spot is already gone.

The BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide covers the height and length thresholds, what counts toward your measurement, and why over-height space sells out first. For this crossing specifically, see live oversized availability on Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Mayne Island (Village Bay).

Travelling without a reservation

Drive-up rules are not the same on every crossing, and one direction stopped taking drive-up traffic in October 2025. See which routes still allow drive-up, how much of each deck is held back for the queue, and what to do on the direction that takes none.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ferry from Tsawwassen to Mayne Island?

1 hour 10 minutes on a non-stop sailing and 1 hour 55 minutes at most, with the majority of departures running about an hour and a half via Galiano. It is the most predictable of the Tsawwassen to Gulf Islands crossings.

The Tsawwassen to Mayne Island ferry is sold out. What can I do?

Set a free FerryHawk alert. Cancellations release right up to departure, and with a short daily schedule an alert is the practical way to catch one before somebody else does.

Is Mayne Island a realistic day trip by ferry?

It is a common one, given how central Mayne sits and how consistent the crossing time is. Check the whole day's schedule before committing to a same-day return, because the gaps between sailings are long.

Why do so many sailings stop at Village Bay?

Mayne's position near Active Pass makes it a natural call on the multi-island runs, and several Saturna and Pender itineraries transfer passengers through it. That is good for connections and bad for elbow room on the vehicle deck.

Can I drive up at Tsawwassen for Village Bay without a reservation?

Standby space is held on every sailing, but the deck is small, so a busy weekend can mean a real wait for the next sailing rather than a short queue.

Does FerryHawk track oversized space to Mayne Island?

Yes, separately from standard vehicles and in both directions, which is worth using given how few over-height spots the route carries per sailing.
