Otter Bay is the vehicle terminal for North and South Pender, and the crossing from Tsawwassen runs anywhere from 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The short end is a non-stop sailing. The long end calls at Galiano and Mayne, sometimes Salt Spring, before it reaches you.
Pender also carries a complication the other Gulf Islands crossings mostly do not: a large share of the Tsawwassen departures on the printed schedule are thru-fares routed via Swartz Bay rather than a direct Gulf Islands run. Those are a genuine way to get there and they take four hours or more. If your booking looks unexpectedly long, that is why. Check the stop details before you assume the schedule is wrong.
The island has a high concentration of vacation and retirement property for its size, which puts steady weekend pressure on a small vehicle deck and a thin daily schedule. A sold-out sailing here is a bigger problem than a sold-out sailing to Victoria, because there is no departure an hour later to fall back on. FerryHawk texts you free the moment a cancellation opens one up.
When this route sells out
Tsawwassen → Otter Bay: property owners fill the good sailings first
Friday afternoon and Saturday morning carry the weekend traffic, and the non-stop departures go before the multi-stop ones because they save more than an hour. With only a handful of sailings a day, one sold-out departure can push a whole plan onto the next morning rather than the next hour.
Otter Bay → Tsawwassen: Sunday, and the mid-route squeeze
Return demand concentrates on Sunday afternoon. Otter Bay is frequently a later call on a multi-island run, so the ship can arrive already loaded from Galiano and Mayne and leave very little for Pender. Mid-week and early-morning sailings are the reliable alternative when your dates flex.
Oversized vehicles, RVs, and trailers
Over-height space (over 7' / 2.13 m tall or over 20' / 6.10 m long) is a small allocation on these vessels, and on a multi-island run it is shared across every island the sailing serves. Boats on trailers are the common case here and most truck-and-trailer combinations are over the 20' line. Book oversized rather than hoping, and set a FerryHawk oversized alert for cancellations.
The BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide covers the height and length thresholds, what counts toward your measurement, and why over-height space sells out first. For this crossing specifically, see live oversized availability on Vancouver (Tsawwassen) ⇄ Pender Island (Otter Bay).
Travelling without a reservation
Drive-up rules are not the same on every crossing, and one direction stopped taking drive-up traffic in October 2025. See which routes still allow drive-up, how much of each deck is held back for the queue, and what to do on the direction that takes none.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the ferry from Tsawwassen to Pender Island?
1 hour 20 minutes on a non-stop sailing, up to 2 hours 45 minutes when the ship calls at other Gulf Islands first. Some Tsawwassen departures are thru-fares routed via Swartz Bay instead, and those take four hours or more.
Why does my Pender booking route through Swartz Bay?
Because a good share of the Tsawwassen to Otter Bay itineraries on the printed schedule are thru-fares via Swartz Bay rather than direct Gulf Islands sailings. It is a real routing, not an error, and it is much longer. Check the stop details on the sailing before booking it.
The Tsawwassen to Pender ferry is sold out. What are my options?
Set a free FerryHawk alert. Cancellations release back into the pool right up to departure, and on a route with few daily sailings catching one is worth considerably more than it is on a mainland crossing.
How far ahead should I book to Pender Island?
As soon as your dates are firm, especially for Friday and Saturday departures in the warmer months. The convenient sailings on this route are a short list.
Can I drive up without a reservation?
Standby space is held on every sailing, but the deck is small. On a busy weekend expect a real chance of waiting for a later sailing rather than a short queue.
Does FerryHawk track oversized space to Pender Island?
Yes, separately from standard vehicles and in both directions. Over-height room on this route is thin enough that an alert is worth setting outside peak weekends too.
