Getting an RV, a camper, or a truck with a trailer onto the Vancouver–Victoria run is a different problem from getting a car on. You are not competing for the same space. Every sailing carries a separate, much smaller over-height allocation, and it empties on its own schedule — usually well before the standard deck shows a single sold-out departure.

The busiest route in the fleet, and a small allocation on every ship
Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay carries more traffic than any other BC Ferries route, but over-height space is a fraction of each vehicle deck. Even the Spirit-class vessels, the largest ships in the fleet, take a limited number of over-height vehicles per sailing. So oversized space behaves like a scarce commodity on an otherwise high-capacity route: plenty of ships, plenty of departures, very few spots that actually fit you.
The return leg is the hard half
Outbound pressure builds Friday from mid-afternoon and again Saturday morning. Coming back, Sunday afternoon goes first, and on a long weekend the crunch shifts to Monday from midday onward. For oversized specifically the return is consistently harder, because a whole weekend of campers and trailers heads home inside the same few windows. The upside of a route this busy is churn: with this many bookings, cancellations land steadily right up to departure.
Is your vehicle oversized?
BC Ferries counts a vehicle as oversized once it is over 7'2" / 2.18 m tall or over 20' / 6.1 m long. That covers most RVs and campervans, trucks with trailers, fifth-wheels and boats in tow — and a fair number of roof-boxed vans whose owners assume they are standard. Measure to the highest fixed point on the vehicle, including air conditioners, racks and antennas.
If you are close to the line, book oversized. A reservation is for the vehicle you declared, and on a full summer sailing there is no spare over-height space to move you into on arrival.

Why is oversized sold out when standard vehicles still have space on the same sailing?
Because they are two different pools. Over-height vehicles get a separate, much smaller allocation on each sailing, and it sells out on its own timeline. A departure showing space for cars can have had no oversized space left for days.
How far ahead should I book an RV on Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay?
For summer weekends and holidays, as soon as your dates are firm — oversized space on the popular departures can be gone weeks ahead. Outside July and August, mid-week travel is usually bookable a few days out.
Can I drive up to Tsawwassen in an RV without a reservation?
You can, but oversized drive-up space is whatever is left after reserved over-height vehicles are loaded, which on a busy day is very little. Expect to wait through more than one sailing, and remember that a single over-height vehicle takes space several cars would otherwise fill.
What counts as an oversized vehicle on BC Ferries?
Anything over 7'2" / 2.18 m tall or over 20' / 6.1 m long. Height is measured to the highest fixed point, so roof boxes, air conditioners and racks all count.
