RV & Oversized Vehicle Space: Horseshoe Bay ⇄ Langdale

RouteWest Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) ⇄ Sunshine Coast (Langdale)
Crossing time40 minutes
TrackingOversized only
Everything on this page is over-height space — vehicles over 7'2" / 2.18 m tall or 20' / 6.1 m long. Standard vehicle availability is a separate pool and is shown on the West Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) ⇄ Sunshine Coast (Langdale) route page.

The Sunshine Coast has no second road in. Everything with wheels arrives through Langdale, which makes over-height space on this crossing the tightest oversized allocation FerryHawk tracks — a smaller vessel means a handful of spots per sailing, not a deck full.

Those spots serve RVs, boat trailers, contractors' rigs and anyone moving something up-coast, all competing for the same few slots. The availability below is oversized only.

Over-height space here goes fast and comes back briefly. Set a free alert and get the text first.

Why oversized space goes first

A small ship absorbing everything the Coast needs

Langdale is not a relief valve for a bigger route; it is the route. Vehicles that would spread across four sailings elsewhere all queue for the same crossing here, and the over-height share of a smaller vessel is correspondingly small. In summer, oversized space on the popular departures is effectively a reservation-only proposition.

Residents and visitors want the same sailings

This is a working route as well as a holiday one. Trades and deliveries move mid-week, campers and boat trailers move Friday out and Sunday back, and the Friday evening and Sunday afternoon departures carry both at once. Cancellations do appear, but on an allocation this small a single released spot goes quickly, which is what makes an automatic alert worth more here than anywhere else in the system.

Is your vehicle oversized?

Over 7'2" / 2.18 m tall or over 20' / 6.1 m long books as oversized. On this route the length rule catches a lot of boat traffic — a truck plus a trailered boat is over 20' long before the boat is a large one.

Measure the full combination and the highest fixed point. With so few over-height spots per sailing, arriving with a vehicle larger than the one you booked is not something the sailing has room to absorb.

The full rules, and what they mean for fares and loading, are in the BC Ferries oversized vehicle guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many oversized spots are there on a Langdale sailing?

Fewer than on the Nanaimo and Victoria routes — it is a smaller vessel and the over-height allocation scales with it. Treat oversized space here as genuinely scarce rather than merely busy, and book or set an alert as early as you can.

Is there another route to the Sunshine Coast if oversized is sold out?

Not for the lower Sunshine Coast. Langdale is the only vehicle crossing from the Lower Mainland, which is exactly why a cancellation alert matters more on this route than on ones with an alternative.

I am towing a boat. Does that book as oversized?

If the vehicle and trailer together are over 20' / 6.1 m, yes. Most truck-and-boat combinations are.

Can I drive up and wait for oversized space?

You can, but on a summer Friday the over-height drive-up space is whatever the reserved vehicles leave behind, and on a small vessel that can be nothing at all. Waiting through sailings is a real possibility.

Does FerryHawk watch oversized space on Langdale sailings?

Yes, separately from standard vehicles and in both directions. You pick the sailing and the vehicle pool, and the text arrives when a spot that fits you opens.
