BC Ferries on the BC Day Long Weekend — August 1–3, 2026
BC Day weekend is the mid-summer peak for BC Ferries: three days off, warm weather, and the whole Lower Mainland pointed at the Island and the Sunshine Coast at once. The travel pattern to plan around
Outbound, the crunch is Friday, July 31 from mid-afternoon and Saturday, August 1 in the morning. Inbound, it's Monday, August 3 from late morning to the last sailing — the single most oversubscribed slot of the weekend. Travelling Thursday, early Saturday, or coming back Tuesday sidesteps most of it.

The first route to sell out, both directions. Friday evening and Monday afternoon go earliest; watch mid-day sailings for cancellation churn.
Horseshoe Bay ⇄ Departure Bay (Vancouver–Nanaimo)
Road-trip central — Tofino and camping traffic fills Friday and Saturday outbound. Standby at Horseshoe Bay is painful; an alert beats the queue.
Tsawwassen ⇄ Duke Point (Vancouver–Nanaimo)
The overflow route: usually the last to sell out and the best bet for RVs and trailers. If Departure Bay is gone, look here before giving up.

What's the best backup if my route is fully booked?
For Nanaimo, swap between Departure Bay and Duke Point — they serve the same city and rarely sell out at exactly the same pace. For Victoria there's no substitute route, so a cancellation alert on Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay is the practical play.
Is drive-up standby realistic on BC Day weekend?
It works if your schedule is flexible — some space is held for drive-up on every sailing — but expect multi-sailing waits at peak times, especially at Horseshoe Bay. A reservation caught via alert is far less painful.
